About us

The Atlit Detention Camp is located near Highway 2 (the Coastal Highway), north of the town Atlit.

The camp is a national heritage site and is an educational center for the heritage and history of the Ha’apala (the Jewish clandestine immigration to Palestine/ Eretz Israel during the British Mandate period).

The camp used to be a detention camp for immigrants who were captured by the British while struggling to enter the land overland or by sea, and for members of the Jewish resistance movements that opposed the British authority, among them members of Etzel (the Irgun), Lehi and members of the Hagana arrested during Operation Agatha (The Black Sabbath).
